David J. miller

A local attorney in Columbia, South Carolina, David J. Miller primarily serves Elgin & the North Columbia area.  However, he is willing to handle cases statewide. Including a judicial clerkship, David has been practicing law for approximately 23 years, almost 11 of those as the Managing Member of the David J. Miller Law Firm, LLC, founded in 2015.  The practice is focused on Injury cases of any kind, especially Wrongful Death and other major injury cases. 

David also practices in the areas of Criminal Defense and DUI, focusing on drug and alcohol cases where he represents clients in the underlying legal case, while also counseling them individually, encouraging them to look to God, and helping them find treatment programs and recovery.  He also offers free consultations to anyone from church or a recovery program in any area in which he is competent, usually Family Court.  “I’ll either help you, or I can get you to someone who can. Either way you WILL be heard.”

In addition to exercise/working out, David has a passion for service and community outreach, volunteering with service projects through his local church, as well as Harvest Hope Food Bank, Transitions Homeless Shelter, Providence Home, TnT prison ministry (also Board member), and Reconciliation Ministries (also Board member). This same ethic is reflected in his service to the South Carolina Bar Association.  He previously served as the 2018-2020 Chair of the Ethics Advisory Committee for the South Carolina Bar Association.  He served for several years on the Professional Responsibility Committee.  Additionally, Mr. Miller volunteers his services to investigate Fee Disputes and Chair Fee Dispute Panels for the Richland County Bar.  He is a past President of the Kershaw County Bar Association. 

During Law School, Mr. Miller served as Research Editor for the Real Property, Probate & Trust Journal.  He was co-chair of the 3L Gift Fund for the new law school.  He was a peer mentor and chair of the peer mentor committee.  Mr. Miller also served as Co-Supervisor of the 2003 South Carolina Bar Review.  In his Third Year, he was awarded the scholarship award for the best senior thesis: Is The Fifth Amendment Like Robin Hood? Taking From The Rich and Giving to The Poor: the Takings Clause of the 5th Amendment. 

He holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree: Education from Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania; a Graduate Certificate in Theology from Columbia International University (CIU); and a Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. In 2025, David obtained his South Carolina Real Estate License.  Additionally, he is a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in the addiction/recovery community.

One unique characteristic that sets David apart from many other practitioners is that he has faced the personal demon of alcoholism in his own life.  After reaching his bottom and having lost almost everything including almost losing his life on a hotel room floor, with God and the help of loved ones he found a path to restoration and healing.  He has been sober since December 16, 2016.  Through this journey, David has found his spiritual gifts of Encouragement, Wisdom, and Intercession, and that his passion and purpose is working with and counseling others to share God and recovery from first-hand experience.  He enjoys working with those that others avoid: alcoholics, addicts, prisoners, and returning citizens.  In other words, he is a missionary to people seeking God and recovery.  He firmly believes life is not a dress rehearsal.  He wants to spend as much time as he can working with and helping others find God and the hope, restoration, and healing he has found.
